manicures and morphine -
just what the doctor ordered

What’s in a Name?

One of the first questions people ask us when we talk about The Lipstick Project is, “why is it called The Lipstick Project?

So, for all you curious souls out there that enjoy a really great story - here it is, taken straight from the history books and the diary of Lieutenant Colonel Mervin Willett Gonin DSO who was among the first British soldiers to liberate the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp in 1945. (Source: Imperial War museum.)

(image care of Banksy)

I can give no adequate description of the Horror Camp in which my men and myself were to spend the next month of our lives. It was just a barren wilderness, as bare as a chicken run. Corpses lay everywhere, some in huge piles, sometimes they lay singly or in pairs where they had fallen.

It took a little time to get used to seeing men women and children collapse as you walked by them and to restrain oneself from going to their assistance. One had to get used early to the idea that the individual just did not count. One knew that five hundred a day were dying and that five hundred a day were going on dying for weeks before anything we could do would have the slightest effect. It was, however, not easy to watch a child choking to death from diptheria when you knew a tracheotomy and nursing would save it, one saw women drowning in their own vomit because they were too weak to turn over, and men eating worms as they clutched a half loaf of bread purely because they had to eat worms to live and now could scarcely tell the difference.

Piles of corpses, naked and obscene, with a woman too weak to stand propping herself against them as she cooked the food we had given her over an open fire; men and women crouching down just anywhere in the open relieving themselves of the dysentary which was scouring their bowels, a woman standing stark naked washing herself with some issue soap in water from a tank in which the remains of a child floated.

It was shortly after the British Red Cross arrived, though it may have no connection, that a very large quantity of lipstick arrived. This was not at all what we men wanted, we were screaming for hundreds and thousands of other things and I don’t know who asked for lipstick. I wish so much that I could discover who did it, it was the action of genius, sheer unadulterated brilliance. I believe nothing did more for these internees than the lipstick. Women lay in bed with no sheets and no nightie but with scarlet red lips, you saw them wandering about with nothing but a blanket over their shoulders, but with scarlet red lips .I saw a woman dead on the post mortem table and clutched in her hand was a piece of lipstick.

At last someone had done something to make them individuals again, they were someone, no longer merely the number tattooed on the arm. At last they could take an interest in their appearance. That lipstick started to give them back their humanity.

That’s the whole story - the restoration of dignity, the recognition of our common humanity, and the knowledge that beauty also works from the outside in.

Sarah: In the Ring on Day 1

When we launched services on April 1st, we knew that the on-site volunteers that we took with us had to be exceptional. They needed to have a keen sense of what we do, how we wanted to do it and had to be super flexible and willing to help tweak and develop the delivery of the program as it went along.

Enter: Sarah. 110% colourful and creative, Sarah is a Vancouver-based hairstylist and all-round fabulous person. She jumped on board with us a handful of months ago and was there in the ring with us on the day we launched our services where she flawlessly worked with three clients to deliver hair services at their bedsides.

We weren’t sure how the residents would respond or if it would be awkward at all between them and the volunteers at first. But when we poked our head into the room where Sarah was doing her first hair trim, she gave us a big smile and an even bigger thumbs up. Mission: accomplished.

“Time you enjoyed wasting is not wasted.” - Anon.

Occupation by day: hairstylist

Occupation by night: bird keeper (has a pet bird)

Favourite place in the world: My room…

Listening to: At the moment I’m listening to a lot of people’s interesting last names being called out on a PA system - while I write this I’m accompanying my father to his cardio checkup.

Inspiration: I hate to admit this…but it’s my mother.  She is so weird, yet creative.  She wears the strangest clothes, yet she doesn’t give a damn of how the world sees her.

What TLP means to you: It is a new challenge. Not only on how I will manage my time but also learning about how people cope in difficult health situations.

Expecting the Unexpected

If you really want to be accurate, the launch of The Lipstick Project on Monday at the North Shore Hospice has been in the works since October 2010 when I first tentatively set foot in the Hamlin Fistula Hospital in Mekelle, Ethiopia with 5 bottles of nail polish and a tub of apricot hand lotion (if you don’t know the whole story, check it out here).

Two and a half years later, The Lipstick Project Society’s on-site team is made up of Vancouver’s very best estheticians, make-up artists, hair stylists and RMTs who are volunteering their time to make our clients just a little bit happier as they live their last days of life in the beautiful North Shore Hospice. Two and a half years later, it was absolutely magical to see our team’s hard work and dreams come to fruition with the delivery of one manicure/pedicure, one nail service for men and two hair cuts at the clients’ bedsides on Monday afternoon.

When this all started, The Lipstick Project was never intended on becoming a part of the Vancouver healthcare scene. But today, our team knows that we want it to become an important part of care in this city. Using caring touch and cosmetics to supplement the system’s clinical activities, relying on manicures and pedicures (our version of morphine and penicillin) we’re aiming to bring comfort to people in some of the most physically and emotionally taxing times of their lives.

It’s exciting for all of us to be a part of something where there really aren’t any rules yet - there’s no box for us to fit into because, as it turns out, we’re actually doing something pretty unique. There’s no one out there doing exactly what we do, for the people that we do it for. It’s a unique opportunity for our team to flex our creative, administrative, interpersonal and business muscles. And, as it turns out, it’s a heck of a lot of fun.

Some of our incredible on-site volunteers, Susan and Sarah, Robin - one of our amazing Team Leads, and Holly - our Director of Partnerships - in the Spa at the North Shore Hospice.

On-site Team Lead, Robin, reflected on the experience writing an email to me on Tuesday saying, “I’d say one of the biggest eye-openers on Monday was the unpredictability of how Hospice clients will feel from one moment to the next.  This highlights the need for us to be adaptable and flexible in light of how clients are feeling (i.e. tailoring services to meet their needs/desires at the time of delivery and throughout the service delivery) - and it’s obvious that our volunteers and our organization is set up perfectly to be completely flexible and adaptable.  Of utmost importance is having an open mind and setting aside any expectations of how we think the day and services will go, and just meeting people wherever they are at when we are there with them.  I believe that delivering this type of ‘personalized’ service will create an equally enjoyable and meaningful experience for both the clients and the volunteers.”

That’s what the journey of The Lipstick Project has been about since day one - letting go of expectations. We are in an ongoing process of realizing that in order to ensure that our clients are happier because of their experience with TLP, our team must maintain a symbiotic relationship between being organizationally solid and embracing the numerous blank spaces on our future’s canvas.

As one of my favourite wordsmiths, Thoreau, once penned, “If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.”

With much love and gratitude,

Susan: We are the Dreamers of Dreams

We first met Susan at an Arbonne National event back in the Fall 2012. We loved her enthusiasm to get involved with the project but lost touch in the ensuing months as we all headed into the busy Christmas season. As luck would have it, one of our Team Leads dropped TLP promo materials off at the spa that Susan works at in Kits and voila - we rekindled the connection! Susan is one of the incredible volunteers on our first team that will be delivering free, professional spa services to our clients at the North Shore Hospice on Monday.

Daria: Nails on the Go

We’re thankful for every one of our supporters here at The Lipstick Project, but there are some people who have been around since Day 1. Daria is one of these people. She connected with us the first time we put out a call for volunteers and then stuck by our side over a number of months as we got the program off the ground. In just a few weeks, her commitment to the project will be realized as she will join us as a member of our first on-site volunteer teams at the North Shore Hospice. She’s a small business owner, comes to us from the gorgeous mountain town of Squamish and is one of those superhero gals that can do it all. We’re honoured to have her on our team. Meet Daria:

People often say that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder,’ and I say that the most liberating thing about beauty is realizing that you are the beholder. This empowers us to find beauty in places where others have not dared to look, including inside ourselves.”
